The Society for Electronic Access (SEA) General Information
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The purpose of SEA is to help make our corner of the digital world a
civilized place to live, work and visit. We believe that the world of
computers and the communications links that bind their users together
("cyberspace") should be open to everyone. Furthermore, if this new
medium is to have a chance of fulfilling its great potential, the same
civil rights that protect our freedom in the physical world must
prevail in cyberspace.
Therefore SEA will work to educate people about computer networks and
how to use them to find information and to communicate with one
another. We will also reach out to foster better understanding of
cyberspace and to ensure that individual rights are fully respected in
this new medium, as befits a democratic society. Finally, we will do
our best to bring into cyberspace those who might not otherwise have
the opportunity or awareness to make use of it, in the belief that
doing so will enrich our lives as well as theirs.
SEA PROJECTS
Here are some of the projects SEA is working on (volunteers and suggestions
appreciated):
- profile of legislators, including database of their votes on issues
relating to computer & telecomm policy and what bills they've sponsored;
- database of media coverage, esp. journalists writing on issues of
interest;
- educational events for the general public, including Introduction to
the Internet, cryptography, Information Infrastructure policy, and
online intellectual property
- be a resource for the legislators who are being offered the option to
have constituents contact them by e-mail, to make sure they thoroughly
understand what it is before they decline the service.
MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
The SEA welcomes as members all people interested in furthering its goal
of "making Cyberspace a better place to live, work, and visit." Though
electronic mail provides a dynamic forum for SEA members to discuss the
legal, ethical, political, educational, and legislative aspects of computer
networking, electronic connectivity is not a requirement for membership.
Nor is membership a requirement to participate in this electronic forum
or to attend meetings. Non-members may not vote, however, and will not
be represented when SEA provides information to government officials.
Dues are currently set at $20.00 for one year, effective upon receipt.
A waiver of the dues requirement can be made for those with financial need
(contact sea-member@sea.org for details). Additional contributions are
welcome, but we need a clear statement explaining that funds beyond the
$20.00 membership are a contribution; otherwise, we will delay processing
the membership to seek clarification.
Membership is open to all persons who have paid dues or obtained a waiver,
regardless of gender, race, religion, or national origin, age, occupation,
or sexual preference.
Dues can be remitted to the SEA Treasurer in person at
a SEA meeting or via U.S. Mail at the following address:

INTEREST GROUPS
SEA has a variety of subgroups exploring the above and other activities.
Most of these groups have an e-mail list associated with them, and
information about the list is indicated where appropriate. For addition
to or deletion from the lists, or for information about the interest
group, send a message to the address indicated as List Maintainer.
Or, if this is too confusing, just send mail to sea@sea.org, and
you'll be put in touch with someone who is interested in what you
are interested in.

MAILING LIST REQUESTS
Please mail to sea-list-request@sea.org for additions to and deletion from
the sea-list mailing list.
LIST ETIQUETTE
The usual rules apply: please don't quote excessively, trim down
forwarded headers, etc. Please keep postings on topics that relate
DIRECTLY to the SEA mission statement; preferably to things relevant
to the New York metro region, unless something really big of common
interest is going on (e.g. the Steve Jackson Games trial). Two basic
rules of thumb: 1) if 90% of list readers will see it somewhere else,
don't post it to sea-list; and 2) if people are going to wonder why
you sent a message to the SEA, post it elsewhere.
SEA mailing lists other than sea-announce are unmoderated. This means
that on these lists SEA does not review nor does it have control over
the content of messages that are submitted and distributed via these
automatic mail reflectors. In particular, SEA urges submitters to
refrain from sending material that is copyrighted and for which no
permission to redistribute has been granted, obscene, defamatory, or
otherwise illegal or which might tend to expose either SEA, the
submitters, or the recipients of the message to legal liability.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Announcements of SEA and SEA-related activities of high interest are
mailed out via the sea-announce mailing list. Anyone requesting a
subscription to sea-list automatically receives sea-announce messages.
Of course, anyone may get sea-announce without getting sea-list if
they so request. Submissions for posting via sea-announce should be
sent to sea-announce@sea.org. This list is moderated by SEA officers,
and messages go out on the list at their pleasure. Addition and
deletion requests for sea-announce should be sent to listproc@sea.org,
with the text of messages containing "subscribe sea-announce Your
Name" or "unsubscribe sea-announce" as appropriate. More information about
the automated list server used to manage sea-announce can be obtained by
sending as message containing the line "help" to listproc@sea.org.
ARCHIVES
The archives include minutes of previous meetings, large files
containing previous postings to sea-list, and other files of general
SEA interest. The SEA makes available a hierarchy of information
through the gopher server at gopher.panix.com -- just access the SEA
item on the top-level menu (typing "gopher gopher.panix.com" should
work for UNIX gopher implementations). For those not on panix or
without access to gopher, e-mail sea@sea.org with your requests.
